Assam bans unauthorised drones near Amur Falcon roosting sites
The state has prohibited non-essential drone use and photography to protect over 1 lakh migratory birds.
The Assam Forest Department has banned unauthorised recreational, commercial, and non-essential drone use, photography, and videography near identified Amur Falcon roosting and congregation sites, according to ANI.
The restrictions follow the arrival of more than 1 lakh migratory birds in the state. Key locations affected include Umrangso in Dima Hasao district and Dharamtul in Morigaon district.
Dr Vinay Gupta, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden, Assam, issued an order on November 6 stating that unregulated drone activity could cause collisions and disrupt natural bird behaviour. Divisional Forest Officers have been tasked with marking sensitive areas and coordinating with police to enforce temporary no-drone zones.
Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah said the department was directed to increase protection and awareness. He noted that the birds arrive annually and urged tourists and content creators to avoid disturbing their natural activities.
The conservation group Aaranyak had previously requested a ban after observing visitors using drones for social media. The group warned that propellers could injure birds during collisions.
The restrictions will remain active during the seasonal presence of the falcons or until further orders. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also appealed to the public to keep the habitats undisturbed.
