Chennai Open singles final postponed due to rain and smog

The WTA 250 championship match between Janice Tjen and Magda Linette will now be held on Monday morning.

The women's singles final of the WTA 250 Chennai Open between Indonesia's Janice Tjen and Poland's Magda Linette was postponed on Sunday due to rain and poor air quality, according to Sportstar and The Hindu.

The match was originally scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam. While the doubles final finished without interruption, the singles final faced three delays caused by rain.

Organisers initially planned to start the match at 9 pm after drying the centre court, but play was called off due to smog from Diwali firecrackers. Accuweather described the air quality as unhealthy at that time, creating visibility issues.

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) said in a statement that the final has been postponed due to unforeseen weather conditions. The contest will now take place at 11 am on Monday, November 9, 2026.

The Tamil Nadu Tennis Association announced that spectators with valid tickets for Sunday's play can enter the venue on Monday using the same tickets. This tournament marks the last Tour-level event on Indian soil for the foreseeable future.

The event has been reallocated to Manila, Philippines, for 2027. This change is due to the monsoon season in Chennai and the popularity of Filipino player Alexandra Eala.
