NC questions Ruhullah Mehdi's role in restoring special status

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference accused the Srinagar MP of self-obsession and questioned his parliamentary efforts regarding statehood.

The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) on Tuesday criticised Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi over his recent comments against the party leadership, according to the Kashmir Observer. The party alleged that Mehdi's speech contained unparliamentary and derogatory language directed at its leaders.

The NC accused the MP of mental and moral bankruptcy, claiming he only chose to resign after receiving instructions from the NC president. The party further stated that Mehdi's focus on reservation and special status issues was belated, noting he had previously served as a minister in 2010 and contested the 2014 Assembly elections on an NC ticket without raising these points.

Questioning his parliamentary contributions, the NC asked if Mehdi had attempted to move a bill or mobilise opposition MPs regarding the restoration of special status and statehood. The party noted that while he gathered signatures from over 100 parliamentarians for an impeachment motion against Allahabad High Court judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav, he had not made similar efforts for Jammu and Kashmir.

Regarding job reservations, the NC said the matter was a serious injustice to open merit candidates and had been included in its election manifesto. The party stated its government formed a Cabinet sub-committee to change the reservation policy, but alleged the file was stalled by authorities.

The NC also alleged that Mehdi failed to organise protests against the Lieutenant Governor's administration concerning recruitment and examination irregularities. The party maintained that its roadmap for identity and constitutional rights requires political strategy rather than theatrics, stating that the restoration of statehood would not come at the expense of special status.
