Tamil Nadu allows six daily shows for new Tamil films
Theatres can now screen up to six shows a day for new Tamil releases during their first week, according to a government announcement.
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced that theatres across the state are permitted to screen newly released Tamil films for up to six shows a day. According to a report by The Hindu, the decision was made on November 3, 2026, following directions from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The additional screenings are allowed for one week from the release date of a film. The permitted operating window extends from 6 am until 2.30 am the following day. The six-show limit also applies on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and local festival days.
The move follows requests from industry bodies, including the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association. These groups had sought the increase to meet demand for new releases.
Previously, under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957, theatres were restricted to four shows a day. After the current government took office, the limit had been increased to five shows during the first seven days of a film's release, as well as on weekends and holidays.
The state government said it will propose amendments to the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules to implement the change. Until the amendment process is finished, theatres must continue to follow existing licensing and formal instructions.
