Asian Champions Trophy hockey matches move to Mohali
The Punjab Sports Department will install a statue of Balbir Singh Senior at the Olympian Balbir Singh Hockey Stadium before the knockout stage.
The Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) action is shifting from Jalandhar to the Olympian Balbir Singh Hockey Stadium in Mohali. According to The Tribune, the Punjab Sports Department plans to install a statue of three-time Olympic gold medallist Balbir Singh Senior at the venue's entrance.
The statue will be inaugurated by Punjab Government representatives and hockey players. This follows the recent inauguration of a 6-ft statue of Olympian Surjit Singh at the Bultron Park Stadium in Jalandhar.
The Mohali facility, which was inaugurated in 2013 and renamed in 2021, will host the tournament's knockout matches. The semifinals and classification matches are scheduled for November 4, while the bronze and gold medal matches will take place on the evening of November 5.
A senior functionary stated that Balbir Singh Senior reached a unique milestone as a player and later coached the Indian team. The stadium can hold approximately 14,500 spectators.
Authorities have arranged for parking at the IS Bindra stadium complex to accommodate fans. An official from Mohali noted that local authorities will meet with relevant departments on Tuesday to manage expected crowds and potential traffic movement.
