Rahul Gandhi remembers singer Sidhu Moosewala at Insaaf Rally in Punjab

The Congress leader recalled his first meeting with the late singer during a political campaign launch in Sangrur.

Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi remembered the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala at the party's 'Insaaf Rally' in Sangrur on Wednesday, according to the Times of India. Gandhi, who was joined by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, recalled his first meeting with the singer and described him as a talented and dynamic young man.

Inviting Moosewala's father onto the stage, Gandhi recounted how the singer had walked into his office with tattoos. He said that before hearing the singer's music, he had been told Moosewala was a good person and a musician who wanted to join the Congress party.

Gandhi stated that during their meeting, he felt Moosewala was entering a dangerous field by joining politics. He said he wanted to offer the singer political protection to help him feel comfortable in that environment. Moosewala was shot dead in May 2022 in Mansa district, Punjab.

During the rally, Gandhi also targeted Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the state's drug problem. He questioned the government's promise to eradicate drug abuse and alleged that Mann's breath would smell of alcohol during interactions in Parliament.

The 'Insaaf Rally' marks the launch of the Congress political campaign in Punjab. Congress leader and Punjab in-charge Sachin Pilot described the event as a "new ray of hope" for the state. The party is preparing for the 2027 assembly elections, where it will contest against the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
