Boston student Celina Poon named Everyday Young Hero by Youth Service America

The 19-year-old intern helped over 300 youths engage with local government and organised an arts fair in Boston.

Boston student Celina Poon has been named an Everyday Young Hero by Youth Service America in October 2026, according to a Times of India report. The award recognises young leaders in the United States who address local needs through community service and volunteering.

Poon served as an intern with the Commonwealth Seminar, a Massachusetts organisation focused on making public life more accessible. During her internship, she led projects that helped more than 300 young people learn about community action and local government.

As part of her role, Poon planned a youth conference that included workshops and guest speakers. The programme taught participants practical skills, such as contacting local representatives and participating in public meetings, to help them address neighbourhood issues.

She also organised an Arts and Culture Fair in Boston, which featured 12 local artists and community groups. The event aimed to connect creative activities with community involvement to make civic participation feel more welcoming.

Poon is currently a second-year Bachelor of Architecture student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her academic interests include the preservation of historic buildings and the creation of accessible public spaces.

She intends to combine her architectural studies with community outreach to ensure longtime residents can influence how their neighbourhoods change during urban redevelopment.
