Opposition leaders cite US midterm results to claim change is coming
Leaders suggest the US election results demonstrate how collective strength can defeat authoritarian tendencies, according to The Hindu.
Opposition leaders in New Delhi on Wednesday cited the results of the U.S. midterm elections to argue that people's collective strength can defeat authoritarian tendencies, according to The Hindu.
Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal stated on X that "change is in the air" and that the results demonstrate how people can take on authoritarianism even when backed by big corporations and social media platforms.
Venugopal said the results remind people that democracy belongs to ordinary citizens rather than billionaires or powerful interests.
Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh described the results as a "stunning verdict" against U.S. President Donald Trump and noted the power of midterm polls to enforce accountability.
Ramesh added that the institutional balance in a constitutional democracy has been "dangerously disturbed in India since 2014" and suggested the One Nation, One Election (ONOE) idea would blunt accountability.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi commented on the victory of Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, noting he will be the first Muslim in the U.S. Senate.
