Police seize over Rs 1 crore from TMC office in West Bengal

The cash was recovered from a party office in Sarisha following the interrogation of an aide to MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Police seized Rs 1,02,79,000 in cash from a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Sarisha, West Bengal, on Tuesday night, according to The New Indian Express. The recovery took place in the South 24 Parganas district within the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.

The search operation followed the interrogation of Sumit Roy, the personal assistant to TMC national secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. Roy is currently in police custody in connection with alleged financial irregularities, including the theft of soil and the forcible grabbing of government land in Salboni.

Abhishek Majumdar, the Additional Superintendent of Police of the Diamond Harbour police district, said that police obtained clues after interrogating Roy for long hours. Majumdar confirmed the seizure of the hard cash during a press conference on Wednesday.

The premises where the money was found is identified as the office of Magrahat West MLA Shamim Ahmed, according to reports from Rediff and Bhaskar English. Ahmed is described as a rebel TMC MLA.

Police are investigating to determine the source of the money and who was responsible for running the office. The MLA did not respond to queries regarding the seizure.

The investigation into the cash and the transactions involving Roy is ongoing.
