Rahul Gandhi attacks AAP government over drug menace in Sangrur rally

The Congress leader questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah's drug eradication timeline and challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a debate.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, November 4, launched an attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab regarding the state's drug menace. Addressing the 'Insaaf Rally' in Sangrur, Gandhi alleged that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was not in a position to effectively tackle substance abuse.

According to Moneycontrol, Gandhi questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah's promise to eliminate drugs within three years. He also demanded accountability regarding drug seizures at Adani's port in Gujarat and accused the Centre of failing to tackle organised crime.

During the rally, Gandhi alleged that Mann would arrive with the smell of alcohol on his breath during their time in Parliament. He stated that while drinking is a personal choice, the Chief Minister cannot be under the influence if he wants to fight substance abuse.

Gandhi also challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open, face-to-face debate to counter allegations that the Opposition has links with foreign forces. He stated he would prove the Prime Minister is a 'desh-drohi' within five minutes of starting a debate.

Ahead of the rally, the Punjab BJP launched its 'Zakhm 84 De' conclave. According to the Deccan Herald, Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon demanded an apology from the Gandhi family for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also questioned Gandhi regarding the 1984 massacre. He asked if Gandhi considered the comments made by his late father, Rajiv Gandhi, regarding the event to be right or wrong.
