One dead and six injured in Assam Oil India facility fire

The fire occurred at an intermediate tank farm in Dibrugarh district during maintenance work on a bath heater.

One person died and six others sustained burn injuries during a fire at an Oil India Limited (OIL) installation in Assam's Dibrugarh district on Friday, November 6, 2026. According to reports from The Hindu and The New Indian Express, the blaze broke out around 9.05 a.m. at the intermediate tank farm in Tengakhat.

The fire originated at an indirect bath heater that had been isolated for maintenance since November 4. Seven workers from an operations and maintenance (O&M) contractor were affected by the incident. While six individuals were rescued for medical care, one person died at the site.

Of the six survivors, five were sent to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, and one was taken to the OIL Hospital in Duliajan. Times Now reported that the injured workers were employees of Spectron Engineers Private Limited, a firm engaged by OIL for the facility.

An OIL spokesperson stated that the fire service department used 11 fire tenders and dry chemical powder to control the flames after using the installation's fixed firefighting system. The fire was extinguished by 12.30 p.m.

OIL has formed an internal inquiry committee to investigate the causes of the fire, assess any damage, and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
