Karnataka CM seeks special financial package for Bengaluru infrastructure
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting funds for the city and assistance for irrigation projects.
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has requested a special financial package for the development of Bengaluru's infrastructure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to the Deccan Herald, the letter also sought faster drought relief and central intervention regarding the demands of sugarcane farmers.
The Chief Minister's response followed an October 31 letter from the Prime Minister, which included Rajyotsava greetings and assurances of cooperation. Shivakumar stated that the state is seeking its rightful share and fair treatment rather than special privileges.
Shivakumar noted that Bengaluru's increasing population and economic activity have put significant pressure on civic infrastructure, roads, and public transport. He requested a financial package to help the city manage this growth.
The Chief Minister also asked the Centre to speed up the processing of approvals and funding for several irrigation projects. These include the Mekedatu, Kalasa-Banduri, Upper Bhadra, Upper Krishna, and Yettinahole projects.
Regarding the Mekedatu project, Shivakumar said it is essential for meeting drinking water needs in southern Karnataka and storing surplus water. He also requested an appointment for an all-party delegation to meet the Prime Minister to discuss sugarcane farmers and drought relief.
In his earlier letter, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the need to protect water bodies and manage waste scientifically as urban centres expand. He expressed his support for the state government's endeavours.
