US election results will not affect India-US ties, says Shashi Tharoor
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated that President Donald Trump maintains significant authority over foreign policy despite the electoral setback of the ruling party.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said on Friday that the results of the US midterm elections will have little effect on relations between India and the US. Speaking in Thiruvananthapuram, Tharoor noted that President Donald Trump keeps substantial control over his international agenda regardless of the ruling party's losses, according to The Times of India.
Tharoor claimed that Washington's stance on several critical issues will remain unchanged. These include tariffs, sanctions regarding the purchase of Russian oil, the conflict in Ukraine, and the war in Iran.
The MP explained that while the US Congress holds power over the budget and government spending, the President has wide discretion in matters of international affairs. He noted that the President can initiate military action for up to 60 days without prior approval, though Congress can later use financial powers to limit spending on expensive campaigns.
Tharoor described the election outcome as an extraordinary setback for the ruling party, noting that midterm elections usually act as a course correction. He also mentioned the success of candidates from minority communities and people of Indian origin, including a mayor of Indian origin in Los Angeles.
Tharoor told those in India expecting a change in the bilateral relationship that they are
completely mistaken.
