TMC and BJP trade charges over alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee’s home

Mamata Banerjee led a protest in Kalighat after an alleged 2 am assault at the residence of Abhishek Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested in Kolkata on Saturday following an alleged attack at Banerjee's Kalighat residence at approximately 2 am. The incident occurred during clashes between TMC workers celebrating Banerjee's 39th birthday and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters, according to reports from ANI and The News Mill.

Banerjee alleged that unidentified individuals had been monitoring his office and home for two days prior to the incident. He claimed the 2 am assault was carried out by BJP supporters and criticised the Kolkata Police and the judiciary for failing to intervene. Banerjee stated this was the seventh attempt on his life in six months.

The clashes, which lasted until 3:30 am, reportedly left at least eight people injured, with three in serious condition. Police deployed a large contingent to the area and detained several individuals. Banerjee also shared a video alleging that a BJP supporter slapped a plainclothes police officer.

Mamata Banerjee joined the protest in the morning, accusing the BJP of hooliganism and targeting the 'INDIA' alliance. She alleged that a group of thugs attacked a Kali Puja celebration and claimed that authorities had revoked permissions for traditional pujas while allowing new ones on main roads. Banerjee also stated she has written to the Lok Sabha Speaker regarding the law and order situation and warned she may approach the Supreme Court.
