CAIT writes to Rahul Gandhi over Delhi market disruptions

The traders' body has questioned whether the right to protest is being placed above the constitutional right to trade and earn a livelihood.

The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has sent a letter to Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding the frequent interruption of business in Delhi. According to reports from The News Mill, Moneycontrol, and News18, the organisation is protesting the impact of political rallies and demonstrations on commercial activities over the last month.

The traders' body specifically highlighted a Congress rally held at Ramlila Maidan on November 1, 2026. CAIT alleged that such gatherings, along with ongoing support from the Congress Party and other political groups for various protests, have caused significant economic damage during the festive and wedding shopping season.

CAIT National President B C Bhartia criticised Gandhi for what he called a contradiction, noting that the leader encourages shopping at local markets while supporting activities that prevent customers from reaching them. Bhartia also raised concerns regarding the selective use of constitutional rights, contrasting the right to free speech under Article 19(1)(a) with the right to trade and carry on business under Article 19(1)(g).

The letter asked who would compensate traders, shopkeepers, and daily-wage earners for the financial losses incurred due to these disruptions. Bhartia stated that traders are the backbone of the domestic economy and should not be used as targets in political battles.

CAIT has announced it will observe a nationwide 'Dhikkar Diwas' (Day of Condemnation). The organisation plans to hold a national meeting of Delhi's traders and leaders from across India in New Delhi after Diwali to decide on the next steps and the date for the observance.
