Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka to receive more rain, says IMD

A surge of moisture-laden easterlies is expected to sustain rainfall across the South Peninsula following cyclone Murasu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam for six days. According to a report by BusinessLine, Kerala and Mahe are expected to see rain from Thursday evening.

The rainfall outlook is particularly pronounced for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, with widespread rainfall likely on Sunday and Monday. Isolated to scattered rain is forecast for these areas on Friday and for three days starting Monday.

Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka are expected to see similar rainfall activity for six days from Friday. Telangana is likely to receive rain on Friday and Saturday.

The forecast follows a period of extremely heavy rainfall in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Telangana ending Thursday morning. Parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal also received heavy to very heavy rain during that time.

A companion trough in easterlies is adding to atmospheric instability. The IMD noted that while the remnant circulation from cyclone Murasu weakened over east Telangana and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, an associated cyclonic circulation is expected to sustain rain and thunderstorms.

Broader model consensus suggests a 20 to 40 per cent probability of a low or depression developing during November 18-24. This potential activity in the Bay of Bengal may be aided by the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).
