Virat Kohli becomes highest ODI run-scorer against New Zealand in Wellington
The Indian batter surpassed Ricky Ponting's record during the second ODI on Saturday at Hnry Stadium.
Virat Kohli became the highest run-scorer against New Zealand in One Day International (ODI) history on Saturday during the second ODI in Wellington, according to the Times of India. The 37-year-old batter moved past former Australian captain Ricky Ponting to claim the record.
Entering the match tied with Ponting on 1,971 runs, Kohli reached the milestone by hitting a boundary in the second over. However, he was dismissed for seven runs off seven balls after a cover drive was caught by Will Young at cover-point, as reported by India TV.
The Indian bowling attack had previously dismissed New Zealand for 134 in a rain-reduced 47-over contest. Gurnoor Brar led the bowling with a four-wicket haul, while Auqib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj, and Axar Patel each took two wickets.
Daryl Mitchell top-scored for New Zealand with 55 runs, while skipper Mitchell Santner contributed 31. India's Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field first.
With his latest achievement, Kohli's tally against New Zealand has reached 1,978 runs. He also holds the record for the most ODI centuries against the Black Caps with seven, having previously surpassed Ponting's record of six.
