Shah Rukh Khan says humour hides sadness following his father's death
The actor revealed that his flamboyant public persona is a way to avoid depression and cover up personal grief.
Actor Shah Rukh Khan said his sense of humour and flamboyance are ways to keep sadness at a distance, according to a Times of India report. Speaking at Airtel THiNK 2012, the actor shared how the death of his father impacted his family and his sister.
Khan recalled that his sister did not cry or speak for nearly two years after their father passed away. He described her as a highly intelligent person who had completed her MALLB but struggled to face the reality of losing their parents.
The actor also mentioned that his sister was hospitalised during the filming of 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'. He said he took her to Switzerland for medical treatment while he was shooting the song 'Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jaana Sanam'.
Khan explained that he developed a sense of detachment and false bravado to cope with loss. He stated that he stays constantly occupied and uses humour to avoid depression.
He described himself and his sister as 'Yatim and Yasim' to signify they were fatherless and motherless. Khan noted that his mother passed away approximately 10 years after his father.
