Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi seeks independent assessment of Siang project impact
The Jorhat MP wrote to Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil regarding potential downstream consequences for Assam.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has requested an independent assessment of the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) due to its potential impact on Assam, according to The New Indian Express.
In a letter to Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil, Gogoi stated that the Siang River is essential to the Brahmaputra basin, supporting Assam's livelihoods, riverine ecosystems, and agricultural economy.
The Jorhat MP noted that while the SUMP is being presented as a strategic move against China's proposed mega-dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo, the interests of downstream communities in Assam need equal attention.
Gogoi said the project's goals of moderating floods and maintaining year-round flows are not guaranteed, especially in a region prone to landslides, extreme rainfall, and glacial lake outburst floods.
Citing the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project, he raised concerns about riverbank erosion, flooding, and sudden water releases. He also referred to a 2025 study regarding declining fisheries and agricultural losses.
Gogoi asked if the Assam government had been formally consulted and called for the disclosure of hydrological studies. He urged the Centre to avoid irreversible decisions without prior consultation and transparent monitoring.
